4. The History of Hewlett Packard (HP) and Business Performance

In 1939, Bill Hewlett and David Packard, both Stanford University graduates, founded HP in a small garage in Palo Alto, California, with an initial capital of $538.

Their first product was the HP 200A, an audio oscillator that gained attention from Walt Disney Studios, which purchased eight units to test the sound system for the film “Fantasia.”

Over the years, HP expanded its product line to include calculators, computers, printers, and other technology products.

The company underwent a significant split in 2015, separating into HP Inc. (personal computers and printers) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (enterprise technology solutions).

In 2011, HP acquired the British software company Autonomy for $11.7 billion. Subsequently, HP alleged that Autonomy had inflated its financial metrics, leading to a significant write-down and legal disputes.

Mike Lynch, Autonomy’s founder, faced extradition to the U.S. on charges related to this acquisition. After a prolonged legal battle, Lynch was acquitted in June 2023.

Tragically, in August 2024, Lynch went missing after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a sudden storm.

In fiscal year 2023, HP reported net revenue of $53.7 billion, a 15% decrease from the prior year. For fiscal year 2024, HP’s annual revenue was $53.559 billion, a slight decline of 0.3% from 2023.

This indicates a stabilization in revenue after the significant drop in 2023.
